Warm afternoon sunlight stretched across the rural Oregon countryside.
Golden autumn trees surrounded the railway as the tracks cut between open meadows and low wooded hills.
But directly between the rails lay a young woman.
She was approximately 27 years old, with curly copper-colored hair.
Her eyes were closed.
She wasn’t moving.
Beside her stood a black-and-white Border Collie.
The worried dog lowered its head.
It gently nudged the woman’s cheek.
Nothing happened.
The dog tried again.
Still no response.
Then something appeared far down the railway.
Headlights.
A passenger train was approaching.

The Dog Suddenly Ran Away
For a moment, the Border Collie remained beside the woman.
Then it looked down the track.
It looked back at her.
And suddenly started running.
The dog raced along the gravel maintenance path beside the railway.
Its ears remained alert.
Its paws moved quickly across the gravel.
Behind it, the woman remained between the rails.
Farther back, the train continued approaching.
The Border Collie wasn’t abandoning her.
It was looking for someone who could help.
The Dog Found a Railway Worker
Near the tracks stood a small timber maintenance hut.
A railway worker was nearby.
He was in his early fifties, with a short gray beard and a beige baseball cap.
The Border Collie raced toward him.
Then it rose onto its hind legs.
Its front paws pressed against the man’s thigh.
The worker immediately looked down.
Something about the dog’s urgency caught his attention.
The Border Collie dropped back to the ground.
Then it turned toward the railway.
The worker looked in the same direction.
He grabbed a red signaling paddle.
And followed.

The Border Collie Led Him Back
The dog ran ahead.
Every few moments, it turned its head to make sure the worker was still behind.
The man followed along the gravel shoulder.
Then the scene ahead became visible.
A person was lying between the rails.
The worker immediately understood why the dog had found him.
He increased his pace.
But as they approached the woman, another problem emerged.
Something was moving near the autumn woodland.
The Border Collie reached its owner first.
It stopped beside her shoulders.
The worker approached from the opposite side.
Then both noticed the animal standing near the right side of the railway.
A cougar.

A Cougar Had Emerged From the Woods
The tawny cougar stood on the gravel near the track.
It watched the Border Collie.
The dog stayed close to the unconscious woman.
There was no physical contact.
The cougar didn’t attack.
But its presence created another tense obstacle.
The railway worker remained on the gravel shoulder.
Then he looked past the woman.
The passenger train was still approaching.
There was no time to ignore either danger.
The worker tightened his grip on the red signaling paddle.

He Raised the Signal Toward the Train
The railway worker stepped into a clearly visible position beside the track.
Then he raised the red circular paddle high above his head.
The train’s headlights were much closer now.
The Border Collie remained beside the woman.
On the opposite side, the cougar began backing away.
Then it turned toward the trees.
The animal retreated toward the autumn woodland.
But the worker kept his attention on the approaching train.
His red signal remained raised.
The woman was still lying between the rails.
And that’s where the moment ends.
The Dog Had Found the One Person Who Could Signal the Train
The Border Collie couldn’t wake its owner.
It couldn’t stop a passenger train on its own.
So it did the one thing it could do.
It ran for help.
The dog found a railway worker and made sure he followed it back.
By the time they returned, the situation had become even more tense.
A cougar had appeared near the track.
And the train was continuing toward them.

The worker responded by raising his red signaling paddle while the cougar began retreating toward the woods.
The video doesn’t show the woman being removed from the tracks.
It ends with the worker signaling the approaching train, the loyal Border Collie remaining beside its owner, and the cougar withdrawing into the Oregon woodland.
The Border Collie couldn’t wake the woman or stop the approaching train — so it ran until it found someone who could understand that something was terribly wrong.
