A routine eviction call in Indian River County, Florida, ended in tragedy when a sheriff’s deputy was killed and another injured during a confrontation at a Vero Beach home.Deputy Terri Mashkow, 47, was shot and killed on November 21 while helping remove Michael Halberstam from his mother’s home. A second deputy was wounded in the shoulder, and a locksmith was also injured. Sheriff Eric Flowers described the incident as “an awful day, six days before Thanksgiving,” noting that the deputies were performing standard duties.
Mashkow, another deputy, and the locksmith approached the residence to serve an eviction notice requested by Halberstam’s mother. Authorities say Halberstam suddenly grabbed a firearm and opened fire. Deputies shot back, striking him multiple times. Mashkow died in the line of duty, while the injured deputy is expected to recover. Halberstam later died on November 23.
