Donald Trump has spent years needling rivals with nicknames, often referring to the 44th president as “Barack Hussein Obama” in a tone meant to sound suspicious or foreign. The twist is that the name tells a very different story than the one Trump seems to be implying.

Donald Trump’s criticism of Former President Barack Obama, 64, stretches back well before his own presidency. During the 2016 election campaign, the Republican nominee regularly targeted Obama in speeches and rallies.

At one Florida rally, Trump even accused the then-president of being responsible for the rise of ISIS.

“Isis is honoring President Obama. He is the founder of Isis. He founded Isis,” Trump, 79, reportedly said, adding of his Democratic opponent: “And, I would say the co-founder would be crooked Hillary Clinton.”

Nearly a decade after Obama left the White House, Trump still regularly invokes the first African American president – often emphasizing his full name.

“I was very proud to have knocked down Iran’s nuclear deal by President Barack Hussein Obama, that was a horrible, horrible, dangerous document,” Trump said while discussing the U.S and Israeli strikes against Iran, and the 2015 agreement negotiated under the Obama administration that aimed to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

According to PBS, the deal remained in force until 2018, when Trump withdrew the United States during his first term. Only one year later, Iran began ignoring some limits on its nuclear activities.
