Bright sunlight covered the peaceful lakeside park.
A 25-year-old woman was riding her turquoise bicycle along the trail.
She wore a coral athletic top, black athletic shorts and white sneakers.
Everything seemed normal.
Then a large white swan suddenly appeared in front of her.
The woman immediately braked.
The mother swan spread her wings.
She looked directly at the cyclist.

The Woman Tried to Continue
The cyclist waited for the swan to move.
Then she slowly guided her bicycle around the bird.
But the swan followed.

The mother swan moved through the tall grass.

The little bird repeatedly tried climbing the soft dirt wall.

She Carefully Reached Into the Hole
The woman knelt beside the opening.
The hole was too deep for the tiny cygnet to escape alone.
So she carefully lowered herself onto the grass.
The mother swan remained beside her.
The woman extended both arms into the opening.
She reached the baby.
Then she gently lifted it.
Small pieces of dry soil fell from its fluffy feathers.
Slowly, the cygnet emerged into the sunlight.
The mother immediately leaned closer.
Her baby was finally above ground.
Mother and Baby Were Together Again
The woman gently placed the cygnet onto the grass.
The tiny bird waddled directly toward its mother.
Within seconds, it disappeared beneath one of her white wings.
The mother lowered her head.
She softly touched her baby’s head with her beak.
The woman smiled.
She wiped the dirt from her hands and returned to her turquoise bicycle.
Before leaving, she looked back one final time.
The mother swan and her baby were walking together toward the sparkling lake.
The Swan Never Gave Up Trying to Get Her Attention
At first, the woman thought the swan was simply blocking the trail.
She tried to ride around her.
But the mother kept following.
She couldn’t lift her baby from the hole herself.
