Morning mist still hung between the pine-covered mountains.
A railway followed the edge of a rushing river, disappearing into an old stone tunnel farther up the valley.
A young woman was hiking through the remote area with her German Shepherd mix when something went wrong.
The loose strap of her backpack became caught near the wooden railway sleepers.
She tried pulling it free.
It wouldn’t move.
The woman remained beside the tracks, unable to get herself completely clear.

The dog raced along the steep gravel path.
His paws kicked loose stones behind him as he climbed farther from the railway.
Near a small maintenance vehicle stood a railway worker.
The man heard barking.
He turned.

The dog ran ahead through the forest, repeatedly turning around to make sure the man was still behind him.
They descended toward the railway.
Through gaps between the pine trees, the worker finally saw someone near the tracks.
A woman.
Now he understood the dog’s urgency.
He immediately used his radio to report the situation.
Then both of them continued toward her.
The German Shepherd reached her first.
He returned directly to her side.
But the danger wasn’t over yet.
The Train Had to Be Stopped
The railway worker assessed the situation.
The woman’s backpack strap remained caught near the sleepers.
Rather than taking unnecessary risks, he coordinated through his radio.
A railway signal showed red.
Farther up the line, the passenger train stopped safely near the stone tunnel.
Only then did the worker focus completely on freeing the woman.
He knelt beside her.
He carefully loosened the trapped backpack strap.
Seconds later, it came free.
The woman could finally move safely away from the railway.
Her dog stayed beside her the entire time.
The train remained far away.
The immediate danger was over.

A short time later, the woman sat on a grassy overlook safely away from the railway.
A gray emergency blanket rested around her shoulders.

She wrapped both arms around him.
This time, she wasn’t trying to stop him from leaving.
She understood exactly why he had done it.
The railway worker stood nearby speaking into his radio.
Far below, the river continued rushing through the valley.
The stopped train remained near the distant stone tunnel.

When the German Shepherd disappeared into the forest, the woman could have believed she had been left alone at the worst possible moment.
