Evelyn sighed deeply, the weight of yesterday’s events still pressing heavily on her shoulders. She glanced over at Lily, who was happily munching on her pancakes, none the wiser to the adult turmoil swirling around her. Evelyn’s heart clenched at the innocence of her granddaughter, and she made a silent vow to protect that innocence as long as she could.
“Okay, Michael,” Evelyn replied, her voice tinged with a mixture of reluctance and curiosity. “Come over. We’ll talk.”
An hour later, Michael arrived with Claire, both looking uncharacteristically serious. Evelyn ushered them into the living room, offering them a seat, though her posture remained guarded.
