
Emily tried to maintain her composure, greeting guests and engaging in small talk, but her thoughts were a whirlwind of confusion and suspicion. Every time she looked at Rachel, she replayed Sophie’s words in her head: “exercising in the bedroom all the time.” It seemed so innocent coming from a child’s mouth, but the implications were anything but innocent.
John, sensing the tension, gently pulled Emily aside into a quieter corner of the house. “Em, you know Sophie has a wild imagination,” he said, trying to reassure her. “She probably just saw us doing some push-ups or something.”
Emily nodded, but her heart wasn’t in it. She wanted to believe him, to trust that their marriage was as solid as she had always thought. But the doubt was a persistent whisper in her mind, refusing to be silenced. She glanced back at the party, where Rachel was laughing with another group of guests, seemingly oblivious to the storm brewing just a few feet away.
