The room around me began to spin, and I had to grip the edge of the counter to steady myself. The world seemed to slow down, every second stretching into an eternity as I listened to Laura’s anguished cries on the other end of the line.
“What happened to the children, Laura?” I asked, my voice barely more than a whisper, a tremor of fear vibrating through it.
“They’re… they’re in the hospital,” she managed between sobs. “Dorothy, they started feeling sick just after lunch. Oh God, I didn’t know! I thought it was just chocolate.”
