The silence on the phone line stretched, heavy and taut, before my mother finally spoke. Her voice was a quiet whisper, almost lost amid the chaos. “Grace, what do you mean?”

I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the medical team working to stabilize Lily. “I mean,” I said, my words sharp and clear, “that I’ve been paying your mortgage because I believed family was about support, about being there when it mattered. But I see now I was mistaken.”
