Rain had recently passed over the city, leaving the streets covered with large puddles.
Sunlight had returned, but the pavement was still wet.
A 70-year-old man stood near the curb.
He had white hair, a short beard and wore an olive-green sweater with beige trousers.
Then a red convertible approached.
Inside was a woman wearing a lilac pantsuit and dark sunglasses.
Her front tire reached a large puddle beside the sidewalk.
Seconds later, a wall of dirty water exploded upward.
The elderly man barely had time to react.
Water struck his sweater and trousers.
He raised his hands in surprise.
The convertible continued forward.
And the woman behind the wheel didn’t stop.

She Looked Back and Smiled
The elderly man remained on the sidewalk.
Water dripped from his sleeves.
His olive-green sweater was soaked.
So were his beige trousers.
He looked down at himself.
Then he looked toward the departing convertible.
The woman glanced back.
Instead of stopping to check on him, she smiled dismissively and continued along the street.
But another driver had witnessed what happened.
A white-and-blue city bus was approaching from behind.
Then it began slowing down.
The Bus Driver Stopped
The city bus pulled safely beside the sidewalk.
Its front door opened.
A 45-year-old female driver stepped outside.
She immediately approached the elderly man.
Instead of simply continuing her route, she checked whether he was okay.
The man looked at her with surprise.
She gently placed one hand on his upper arm.
Then she pointed toward the open bus door.
He didn’t have to remain standing outside in his soaked clothing.
She was offering him a safe place inside.

She Helped Him Onto the Bus
The elderly man approached the entrance.
His wet clothes still clung to him.
He placed one hand on the bus railing.
The driver remained beside him, supporting his upper arm as he carefully climbed the first step.
Farther along the curb, the red convertible had stopped.
The woman in the lilac suit was now standing beside her car.
The bus driver focused on helping the elderly passenger.
Then the bus prepared to continue along the wet street.

The elderly man was finally inside.
The doors closed.
The bus began moving again.
Ahead, another large puddle remained beside the curb.
And the woman from the convertible was standing directly beside it.
Then the Bus Reached the Same Kind of Puddle
The city bus continued forward.
Its curb-side tire rolled through the standing water.
A large splash rose from the road.
This time, the woman beside the red convertible was in its path.
Dirty puddle water swept across her lilac suit.
She threw both hands upward.
Her mouth opened in shock.
Water also splashed across the open-top car beside her.
The bus never touched her.
It simply continued safely through the lane.
But suddenly, she understood exactly how unpleasant an unexpected roadside splash could feel.

The Elderly Man Was Finally Safe Inside
Near the front of the bus, the elderly man settled into a blue passenger seat.
His sweater was still damp.
But his shoulders finally relaxed.
He looked toward the woman behind the steering wheel.
A small grateful smile appeared beneath his white beard.
The bus driver remained focused on the road.
Other passengers sat quietly farther behind them.

Outside, the wet city continued passing beyond the windows.
But the elderly man was no longer standing alone on the sidewalk.
Someone had stopped.
Someone had noticed.
And someone had treated him with the consideration he hadn’t received moments earlier.
One Driver Laughed — Another Chose to Help
Both women had encountered the same elderly stranger.
Their reactions couldn’t have been more different.
One drove through the puddle, soaked him and continued away.
The other stopped her bus.
She stepped outside.
She checked on him.
Then she helped him aboard.
The later splash beside the convertible created an unexpected reversal.
But the most important part of the story wasn’t who ended up wet.
It was who chose compassion when someone needed it.

By the end, the elderly man wasn’t thinking about the puddle anymore.
He was sitting safely inside the bus with a grateful smile.
One driver left the elderly man standing alone in soaked clothes — but another stopped her entire bus to make sure he didn’t have to stay there.
