Morning sunlight stretched across the pine-covered hills.
A rural railway line cut through the quiet American landscape.
Everything seemed normal.

Fresh mud, rocks and broken tree branches covered both rails.
There was no clear path through.

The Dog Started Running Toward the Train
The German Shepherd immediately moved.
He stayed safely on the gravel shoulder beside the railway.
Then he began running.

The landslide became smaller behind him as he raced toward the approaching train.
He barked repeatedly.
Then he looked toward the locomotive.
The train was still safely in the distance.
But it continued moving toward the blocked section of railway.
The dog kept running.
He needed someone inside that locomotive to notice him.

The German Shepherd reached a long, straight section of railway.
He stopped several feet away from the rails.
Then he began barking.
He jumped urgently.
He looked toward the train.
Then back toward the direction of the landslide.
Inside the locomotive cab, the middle-aged driver noticed him.

He stood on the gravel shoulder.
The driver stepped down from the locomotive.

The driver stared at the blocked railway.
Then he slowly turned toward the dog.

The German Shepherd hadn’t been chasing the train.

The driver walked toward the white German Shepherd.
Then he knelt beside him.

But beside the locomotive, the German Shepherd remained calm.
His frantic barking had stopped.
The train was safe.

The German Shepherd couldn’t remove the rocks.
He couldn’t clear the mud from the rails.
And he couldn’t communicate with the driver using words.
