Cars continued moving along the busy suburban road.
But beside the pavement, one Canada goose wasn’t going anywhere.
The mother stood directly over a storm drain.
She repeatedly looked through the metal grate.
Then she spread her wings.
Something was underneath her.
Six tiny goslings.
The yellow-and-brown babies were huddled together inside the shallow concrete drain.
They could see their mother above them.
But they couldn’t climb back out.
Their Mother Refused to Leave
The Canada goose paced beside the drain.
Every few moments, she looked down at her babies.
Then she moved toward the roadside and raised her wings.
Cars continued passing at a safe distance.
But nobody stopped.
The six goslings remained beneath the grate.
Their mother returned to them again.
She couldn’t lift the heavy metal cover.

Then a white pickup began slowing down.
Someone Finally Noticed Her
A 35-year-old woman safely pulled onto the shoulder.
She stepped from her truck wearing work gloves and carried an orange safety cone toward the drain.
The mother goose watched carefully.
The woman didn’t rush toward her.
She approached slowly.
Then she looked through the grate.
Her expression immediately changed.
There wasn’t one trapped baby below.
There were six.
She placed the safety cone nearby and prepared to get help.
The Heavy Grate Had to Be Opened
A local roadside rescue worker soon arrived.
The mother goose moved several feet onto the grass but continued watching.
Using the proper lifting equipment, the rescuers began raising the heavy metal grate.
Slowly, the drain opened.
The goslings remained together below.
Now the rescuers could finally reach them.
The rescue worker put on protective gloves.
Then he carefully reached inside.
One by One, the Babies Came Out
The first gosling was gently lifted into the daylight.
Then came the second.
The third.
The fourth.
The fifth.
Each baby was placed safely on a soft green towel beside the woman.
Only one remained.
The worker reached into the drain again.
Then the sixth tiny gosling appeared above the opening.
The mother goose immediately leaned forward.
For the first time, all six of her babies were safely above ground.
Six Little Goslings Ran Back to Their Mother
The rescuers moved back.
The goslings didn’t need directions.
One after another, they hurried across the grass.
Their mother lowered her wings.
The babies gathered around her.
She gently touched them with her beak.
Several feet away, the woman and rescue worker watched quietly.
Then the reunited family began walking.
The mother led.
All six babies followed closely behind.
Beyond the roadside grass was a peaceful pond.
Together, they headed toward the water.
She Stayed Until Someone Finally Understood
Drivers may have seen only a goose standing strangely beside the road.
But the mother knew exactly what was beneath her.
Six babies were waiting for her.
She couldn’t open the grate herself.
So she stayed.
