Mist drifted across a quiet two-lane road in the American West.
Rain had turned the roadside into thick brown mud.
Beside an old barbed-wire fence, a small reddish-brown bison calf was struggling.
One of its hind legs had become caught beneath the lowest twisted strand.
The calf pulled forward.
But the wire wouldn’t release.
Then the camera pulled back.
Only a few yards away stood something much larger.
A massive adult American bison.
It remained motionless in the road, watching the trapped calf.
A Pickup Stopped Beside the Road
A mud-splashed brown pickup slowly approached.
The driver immediately noticed the unusual scene.
She pulled onto the shoulder and stopped.
A 35-year-old wildlife rescuer stepped outside wearing a bright-yellow waterproof jacket.
Then she saw the calf.
She also saw the enormous adult standing nearby.
