The turquoise water off the Florida coast looked peaceful from above.
But just beneath the surface, a mother bottlenose dolphin was in trouble.
An abandoned orange fishing net had become tangled around her body.
Every movement risked pulling more of the loose material around her.
But the mother wasn’t focused only on herself.
Two small gray calves were swimming beside her.
Even while trapped, she kept positioning herself between the dangerous net and her babies.
Sunlight streamed through the water as the exhausted mother remained close to the surface.
And her calves weren’t going anywhere.
The Babies Refused to Leave Their Mother
One calf swam directly toward her face.
