The words hung in the air, almost visible in their weight. Mom’s smile faltered, confusion clouding her eyes. “What are you talking about, dear? What happened to Suzie?”
I thrust the note toward her, the paper trembling in my hand as much as my voice. “Read it. She left it at the hospital.”
Her eyes scanned the note, her expression shifting from confusion to shock. “I don’t understand,” she murmured, looking up at me. “I haven’t done anything to Suzie.”
