The pieces began to fit together in the minds of those present. Detective Bennett’s face softened with a mixture of compassion and determination as she connected the dots. The realization was a punch to the gut, and everyone in the room felt the weight of Emma’s brief explanation.

Gently, Detective Bennett continued, “Emma, thank you for telling us. You’re very brave. We’re going to make sure you’re safe from now on.” Emma simply nodded, her large eyes reflecting a mix of relief and fear.
