A legal battle — and a final decision

Her decision sparked a fierce legal fight. Her father tried to stop the procedure, arguing that her life should be preserved despite her suffering.

However, both Spain’s Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights ruled in her favor, allowing the euthanasia to proceed under the country’s 2021 law, which permits assisted dying in cases of severe and enduring suffering.

Judges determined that her choice was made freely and with full awareness.

A family divided

The emotional toll on her family was profound.

Her mother, Yolanda, stood by her daughter — even while struggling to accept her decision.

”I do not agree, but I will always be by her side.”

Her father, meanwhile, continued to oppose the process until the very end.

Inside her final moments

In the days leading up to her death, Noelia remained resolute. She spoke openly about her desire for peace after years of pain.

“I just want to go in peace and stop suffering.”

She also shared how she wanted to face her final moments:

“I’ve always thought I want to die beautiful. I’ll put on my prettiest dress and make-up.”

Noelia’s mother, Yolanda Ramos, stayed by her side through the night at Sant Camil Hospital, just hours before the procedure was scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. local time — a process intended to “ensure a death without suffering.”

Her father, Geronimo Castillo, along with other close family members, including her siblings and grandmother, also came to the hospital to be with her in her final hours.

Before the procedure, the 25-year-old reportedly asked for more time with her loved ones — a request that kept them together longer than originally planned.

Although the family was expected to step out and leave her alone with the doctor administering the injections around 5:30 p.m., they remained by her side for at least another half hour.

The procedure itself is believed to have ultimately begun around 6:30 p.m. local time. According to reports, the procedure lasted only minutes.

A debate that won’t fade

Noelia’s story has once again brought global attention to the complex and emotional issue of euthanasia.

Supporters argue that individuals enduring unbearable suffering should have the right to choose their own end. Critics, however, believe laws like these risk failing to protect the most vulnerable.

As one supporter put it:

“It’s her life and she has the right to decide.”

But for her family — and many watching around the world — the question remains far from settled.
