Why Trump emphasizes Obama’s full name

Obama’s full name is Barack Hussein Obama II. The middle name comes from his father, Barack Obama Sr., who was born in Kenya. Obama himself, however, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1961 to an American mother and Kenyan father.

Despite that fact, a conspiracy theory claiming Obama was secretly born outside the United States circulated widely for years. Known as the “birther” conspiracy, it falsely alleged that Obama had been born in Kenya and therefore was not eligible to serve as president.

Many analysts say Trump’s repeated use of Obama’s full name – especially the middle name Hussein – was to subtly reinforce claims that Obama was somehow less American or connected to Islam.

Obama is in fact, Christian.

‘Obamas name honours him’

But the tactic hasn’t gone unnoticed. Some commentators online have pushed back, arguing the wording is used deliberately to shape perceptions.

“[Trump] believes that saying his name that is of Arabic and Kenyan origin that people will picture him with a beard, a headscarf and an AK [assault rifle] like a terrorist,” Bricktop_NAFO recently tweeted. “He does this on purpose.”

The same commenter went on to defend the former president, pointing out that the name Trump often emphasizes carries a very different meaning.

“What Trump will never understand, is that Hussein in Arabic means ‘handsome,’ ‘beautiful,’ or ‘good.’”

He continued, “Obamas name honours him in every sense of the word.”

‘Blessed’ and ‘handsome’

Ironically, the meaning behind Obama’s name tells a very different story than the one often implied in political rhetoric.

According to Ancestry.com, the first name Barack has roots in several African languages, including Swahili, and is generally understood to mean “blessing” or “one who is blessed.” The name has historically been associated with good fortune and prosperity.

His middle name Hussein – sometimes spelled Hossein – comes from Arabic origins, and carries meanings like “good,” “handsome,” or “beautiful.” Obama’s middle name is also associated with positive moral qualities and virtue, the name etymology source reports.

Lastly, his surname, tied to the “African Luo tribe of Kenya,” “resonates with the idea that even though a path may not be straight, it can still lead to success and fulfillment.”

Combined, the name Barack Hussein Obama II roughly translates to something close to “one who is blessed, good, and handsome – son of Obama.”

While political rhetoric may try to frame the name in a negative light, linguistically it carries meanings that are overwhelmingly positive.

‘10 times the president that Trump will ever be’

Political name-calling is nothing new in American politics, and Trump’s style of rhetoric has often leaned heavily on nicknames and verbal jabs aimed at opponents and rivals.

But in the case of Obama’s full name, the intended insult may not land the way it’s meant to.

Instead of suggesting something negative, the meanings behind the names Barack and Hussein reflect themes of blessing, goodness, and virtue – a far cry from the insinuations often implied when the name is used as a political dig.

“Obama is ten times the man, 10 times the father, 10 times the American that Trump will ever be,” Bricktop_NAFO said, adding, “Barack Hussein Obama II is 10 times the president that Trump will ever be.”
