Moments later, a detective entered the room, introducing himself as Detective Ramirez. He was a middle-aged man with watchful eyes and an air of experience that suggested he had seen similar cases before.
“Mrs. Sullivan,” he said, taking a seat opposite her. “I need you to walk me through your day. Anything you can remember might help us clear this up.”
Dana took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. “I… I was rushing around this morning,” she began, recounting her hectic schedule. “I was at the office, then came home to finish packing. Caleb said he wasn’t feeling well, so I did most of it myself.”
Detective Ramirez listened intently, jotting down notes. “And you didn’t notice anything unusual about your bag?”
She shook her head vehemently. “No. I swear, I only packed clothes, toiletries, and some snacks for the flight. I don’t understand how those drugs got in there.”
The detective leaned back, studying her. “Your husband pointed the finger at you pretty quickly back there. Any idea why he would do that?”
Dana hesitated, the memory of Caleb’s smile flashing in her mind. It was a smile she knew well, usually reserved for moments when he felt superior or had outsmarted someone. But why now, and why at her expense?
“We’ve been having some issues,” she admitted, her voice barely a whisper. “Caleb lost his job, and things have been tense. But I never thought he’d… I mean, this doesn’t make sense.”
Detective Ramirez nodded, his expression unreadable. “Do you think he could have planted the drugs in your bag?”
The question hung in the air, heavy with implication. Dana considered it, the pieces slowly falling into place. Caleb’s recent behavior, his insistence on her handling the packing, his empty carry-on… It all pointed to a chilling possibility.
Before Dana could respond, there was a knock at the door. Another officer entered, whispering something to Detective Ramirez. The detective’s eyes widened slightly, and he turned back to Dana with a more serious expression.
“It seems we need to dig a little deeper into your husband’s activities,” he said. “In the meantime, sit tight. We’re going to get to the bottom of this.”
As the door closed, Dana felt a flicker of hope amidst the chaos. Perhaps, there was a chance to prove her innocence and uncover the truth about Caleb’s betrayal.
