“She won’t. She’s too focused on Caleb’s illness. As long as we stick to the plan, she’ll never know,” Mark replied, his tone casual, as if they were discussing the weather instead of conspiring against my family.

My stomach churned, bile rising in my throat. How could he? My own brother, someone I trusted implicitly, had betrayed us. And Dr. Reynolds, the man who was supposed to save Caleb, was part of this nightmare.

I listened to several more recordings, each one solidifying the horrifying truth. They had been poisoning Caleb, using his illness to cover their tracks. Their ultimate goal was still a mystery, but the betrayal was clear.

I snapped the tablet shut and wiped my tears angrily. I couldn’t fall apart now. Caleb had left me a map to the truth, and I had to honor that. I had to protect myself and expose these monsters.

First, I needed to secure the evidence. Grabbing a duffle bag, I packed the tablet, Caleb’s letter, and anything else that might help prove their guilt. I couldn’t stay here. They could be watching, waiting for their chance to strike again.

I called my closest friend, Jenna, someone I knew I could trust with my life. As soon as she answered, I poured out the story, trying to keep my voice steady as I spoke.

“Meet me at the safe house,” she said immediately, understanding the gravity of the situation. “We’ll figure out the next steps together.”

The safe house was a cabin Jenna’s family owned in the woods, miles away from any prying eyes. It would give us the time and space we needed to plan our next move.

Before leaving, I took one last look around Caleb’s room. This was the last place he felt safe, the last place he was truly happy. I promised him, and myself, that I would see this through to the end. I owed him that much.

I stepped out of the house, locking the door behind me, and walked into the unknown. The battle for justice had just begun, but I knew Caleb was with me every step of the way. And I would not stop until those responsible for his death were brought to justice.
