Green Day sparked discussion during the Super Bowl LX opening when viewers noticed the band skipped a well-known lyric from their hit song American Idiot. The group performed a medley of their biggest songs and closed with the iconic track, but one controversial line was noticeably missing. In recent years, the band had changed the lyric “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda,” a direct reference to Donald Trump and his political movement.
During this year’s Super Bowl performance, however, the band avoided the moment entirely, choosing not to sing that part of the song, seemingly steering clear of potential controversy. Some viewers in the UK also complained that Channel 5’s broadcast barely showed Green Day’s performance, leaving many fans frustrated and saying the network “didn’t show it.”
