Bright morning sunlight spread across a quiet sheep farm in rural Montana.
Golden autumn grass covered the fields, while evergreen hills rose beyond an old wooden fence.
Near that fence, a tiny cream-colored lamb had wandered into trouble.
The young animal had soft brown ears and a small brown patch surrounding its left eye.
Its wool had become tangled among thin, thorn-covered branches.
The lamb tried to move forward.
But the branches held it in place.
It called repeatedly.
Then something appeared on the narrow trail behind it.
A silver-gray wolf with a dark stripe along its back was approaching.
The wolf moved closer.
The lamb remained trapped.
And there was no person nearby to help.

Two Large Dogs Suddenly Appeared
Just as the wolf approached, two Bernese Mountain Dogs entered the trail.
Both were large, powerful dogs with thick black, white and rust-colored coats.
But their markings were different.
The first had a broad white stripe down its face and wore a plain red collar.
The second had a narrower white facial stripe and wore a blue collar.
The dogs moved directly between the trapped lamb and the approaching wolf.
Then they began barking firmly.
The wolf stopped.
For several moments, the animals watched one another.
The two dogs held their position.
They didn’t chase or attack.
Their presence was enough to make the wolf hesitate.
Then the wolf turned away.
It began retreating toward the pine trees.
The lamb was no longer facing the approaching animal.
But it was still caught in the thorn bush.
One Dog Stayed While the Other Ran for Help
The two Bernese Mountain Dogs remained beside the trapped lamb.
Then the dog wearing the red collar turned toward a nearby trail.
Its companion, wearing the blue collar, stayed close to the little animal.
The red-collared dog began running.
It followed the trail into a small apple orchard.
There, a woman in her early thirties was collecting apples beside a wooden basket.
She had freckles, fair skin and blonde hair tied into one long braid.
She wore a navy field jacket over a mustard-colored shirt, dark olive trousers and brown hiking boots.
Suddenly, the large dog appeared beside her.
It barked.
Then it gently nudged her hand.
The woman looked down.
The dog turned toward the trail.
Then it looked back at her.
She set down the apple she was holding.
Something about the dog’s behavior told her it wanted her to follow.

The Dog Led Her Straight to the Lamb
The woman followed the red-collared Bernese Mountain Dog out of the orchard.
The dog moved ahead along the farm trail.
Every few moments, it checked that she was still behind it.
Then the old wooden fence came into view.
Beside it stood the second Bernese Mountain Dog.
The blue-collared dog had remained exactly where the trapped lamb needed protection.
As the woman approached, she saw the tiny cream-colored animal among the thorn branches.
The wolf was gone.
But the lamb couldn’t move freely.
The woman immediately knelt beside it.
She examined the tangled branches and the wool caught between them.
Now she understood why the dog had come looking for her.
The two large dogs remained nearby.
The woman reached for her work gloves.
She needed to separate the branches carefully without pulling on the lamb’s wool.
Then she began working.

She Carefully Freed the Lamb From the Thorns
The woman gently moved one thin branch aside.
Then another.
The lamb remained still as she worked around the tangled wool.
She carefully loosened the strands caught between the thorns.
The two Bernese Mountain Dogs watched from the grass.
The red-collared dog sat nearby.
The blue-collared dog remained close to the fence.
Gradually, the branches released their hold.
The woman placed one hand beneath the lamb’s chest.
Then she gently guided it forward.
The little animal stepped onto clear grass.
Nothing was holding it anymore.
The lamb was finally free.

The Lamb Was Safe Between Its Rescuers
A short time later, the woman sat comfortably on the golden grass near the same wooden fence.
The rescued lamb rested across her lap.
Its cream-colored wool, brown ears and little patch around its left eye were clearly visible.
On her left sat the Bernese Mountain Dog wearing the red collar.
On her right sat the Bernese Mountain Dog wearing the blue collar.
The woman gently stroked the lamb.
Then she reached toward each dog.
Both relaxed beside her.
The little lamb lifted its head calmly.
The danger had passed.
Behind them, the autumn meadow stretched toward the evergreen hills.
The scene was peaceful again.
The Dogs Did More Than Protect the Lamb
The story began with one tiny lamb trapped in a thorn bush.
It couldn’t free itself.
And when a wolf appeared along the trail, the situation became even more frightening.
Then two Bernese Mountain Dogs arrived.
They positioned themselves between the lamb and the wolf.
Without fighting or making physical contact, they stood their ground until the wolf retreated.
But their work wasn’t finished.
The lamb remained tangled in the branches.
So the two dogs took on different roles.
One stayed behind.
The other ran toward the orchard.
There, it found a woman and repeatedly signaled for her to follow.
The dog led her back to the fence, where its companion was still watching over the lamb.
The woman carefully separated the thorn branches and guided the little animal onto clear grass.

By the final scene, the lamb was resting safely in her lap.
And both Bernese Mountain Dogs were sitting peacefully beside them.
The two Bernese Mountain Dogs didn’t simply chase away the danger — one stayed to protect the trapped lamb while the other found someone who could finally set it free.
