Warm afternoon sunlight covered a peaceful mountain lake in Colorado.
A 38-year-old man sat quietly on the grass near the shoreline.
Behind him stretched pine-covered mountains and sparkling water.
Then something unexpected approached.
An adult Canada goose walked directly toward him.
The bird came close and suddenly spread both wings.
The man immediately turned around.
His expression changed from relaxed to startled as he realized how close the goose had come.
But the bird didn’t fly away.
Instead, it remained beside him.

The Goose Wanted His Attention
The Canada goose folded its wings.
Then it extended its neck toward the man’s arm.
Its beak gently nudged the sleeve of his rust-orange jacket.
The man looked down, confused.
Then the goose stepped away.
It walked several feet toward the grassy shoreline.
But instead of continuing alone, it stopped.
The bird turned its head.
It looked directly back at him.
The man began to understand.
The goose appeared to want him to follow.
He Followed the Goose Along the Lake
The man stood and began walking behind the bird.
The Canada goose led the way along the grassy edge of the mountain lake.
Every few moments, it glanced backward.
The man remained only a few steps behind.
Then the goose headed toward an area of taller grass.
Something was there.
As the man moved closer, he finally saw it.

A Tiny Gosling Was Trapped
Sitting in the grass was a small yellow-and-gray gosling.
Thin gray fishing net surrounded its fluffy body and feet.
The little bird couldn’t walk away.
The adult Canada goose stopped immediately beside it.
The man crouched down.
The confusion on his face disappeared.
Now he understood why the adult bird had approached him.
The gosling remained still in the grass.
There were no visible wounds.
But several strands of netting were preventing it from moving freely.
The man carefully reached toward the mesh.

He Began Removing the Fishing Net
The man used both hands.
Instead of pulling quickly, he carefully loosened the individual sections of netting.
He lifted one strand away from the gosling’s fluffy body.
Then another.
The adult goose remained close.
It watched his hands as he worked.
Finally, the man reached the strands surrounding the gosling’s feet.
He gently separated them.
The last section of mesh came free.

The Gosling Could Stand Again
The removed fishing net now rested separately on the grass beside the man’s knee.
Nothing remained around the gosling.
The tiny bird stood.
Then it took a small step toward the adult Canada goose.
The man remained crouched beside them.
He smiled with relief.
Then he looked toward the camera and raised one thumb.
The adult goose stood calmly beside its newly freed gosling.
The Goose Had Found the Help Its Gosling Needed
Only minutes earlier, the man had been sitting alone beside the lake.
He had no idea that a tiny bird was trapped nearby.
The Canada goose couldn’t explain the problem.
So it found another way to communicate.
It approached him.
It nudged his sleeve.

Then it walked away and repeatedly checked that he was following.
That unusual behavior eventually led him directly to the gosling.
Once the fishing net was removed, the little bird could finally stand beside its parent again.
The Canada goose couldn’t remove the fishing net itself — so it found someone beside the lake, got his attention and led him directly to the tiny gosling that needed his help.
