I took a deep breath, unable to guess what was coming next. My boss, usually so cold and distant, seemed… hesitant.
— “Sit down,” he finally said, his trembling voice betraying an unusual emotion.
I sat down, my heart pounding wildly.
— “Do you remember the man you helped a few weeks ago?” he continued.
I nodded timidly, surprised he was bringing it up.
— “He isn’t just some stranger,” he murmured. “He’s the father of an important partner of our company… and he suffers from dementia.”
I froze. The father of an important partner… and ill?
— “He wandered out of his home one day without telling anyone, and got lost,” Mr. Delcourt went on. “No one knew where he was or if he was safe… until your act reached them.”
A chill ran down my spine. My simple act of kindness — offering a hot meal and some water — had helped a vulnerable man at a critical moment in his life.
— “Your generosity has been noticed by influential people,” he added, his voice softer. “They want to meet you and… offer you an opportunity that could change your life.”
I remained frozen, unable to speak, my hands gripping the edge of the chair. The gesture I believed insignificant had triggered something far bigger than me.
There was a long silence. Then, for the first time in weeks, a faint smile appeared on his lips:
— “Congratulations, Léna… you didn’t see that coming, did you?”
I shook my head, stunned. My simple moment of compassion, one instant of humanity, had just transformed into an unexpected chance… and I already felt that my life would never be the same again.
