I shifted slightly, trying to glimpse shadows moving across the carpet. Were they hiding something? Someone? My mind flickered to the news stories of runaways and missing children. Was my daughter harboring fugitives?

Breathing shallowly, I peeked out just enough to see the hem of Lily’s jeans and a second pair of sneakers. A third pair moved into view, and I clamped a hand over my mouth to stifle a gasp. The room was filled with kids, and they were all pacing anxiously.

The clatter of something metallic hit the floor, and the room fell silent. I could almost feel the collective intake of breath. Lily’s voice, now a blend of authority and fear, commanded attention. “Pick it up! We can’t leave any trace. Do you understand?”

I fought the urge to burst out and confront them. I had to trust that there was a reason for this clandestine gathering, even if it terrified me. Despite the fear, a part of me swelled with conflicted pride. My daughter seemed to be leading this group, whatever their cause might be.

Minutes dragged on as they shuffled around, occasionally moving closer to the bed. I squeezed my eyes shut, praying they wouldn’t discover me. Then, a tap on the window.

Everyone froze, and I felt the tension spike. The situation was shifting rapidly, and I couldn’t discern if it was for better or worse. As the kids started to gather their things, Lily addressed them one last time. “Remember, same time tomorrow. And don’t forget the supplies.”

The plan was clear—they’d be returning. But why? I needed answers, and more importantly, I needed to protect my daughter. As they filed out of the room, I slowly extricated myself from under the bed, my body protesting with cramps and stiffness.

In the silence that followed their departure, I stood alone, my mind made up. I would confront Lily, but not with anger—with understanding. Whatever she was involved in, I would help her find a way out. We’d face it together.

But first, I needed to know the truth. With resolve hardening in my chest, I decided to follow her to school the next day, to see what she was hiding not just at home, but also during the hours she was supposed to be in class. Whatever was going on, I was determined to uncover it, and ensure that my daughter was safe.

Only time would tell if this was the right choice, but I was prepared to face whatever came our way.
