“Detective, this is Dr. Jonathan Mercer from St. Catherine’s Medical Center,” he began, his voice steady despite the turmoil within. “I believe we have a situation that requires immediate police investigation. I have… evidence of a mysterious intruder in our hospital.”

As he hung up the phone, Mercer could only hope that the truth, no matter how unfathomable, would ultimately bring peace to the nurses, the hospital, and, perhaps, the man who lay in silent vigil, holding secrets of his own.
