He shook his head, glancing at the laughing group. “We’ll have to issue fines, possibly stop-work orders,” he said gravely. “This is serious.”

Next came the police, responding to my call about trespassing and unauthorized living arrangements. They were sympathetic, understanding the delicate nature of family disputes but firm on the side of the law. “You have the deed in your name,” the officer confirmed after reviewing my paperwork. “You have the right to ask them to leave.”

Emily’s laughter faded when the police explained the legalities. Rick’s smug expression turned to anger, but he held his tongue as his parents exchanged worried glances. No more whispers about my softness now.

Finally, my lawyer arrived, a steady anchor in the swirling storm. Together, we lay out the next steps, ensuring the legal process would be swift and undeniable. My lawyer assured me that eviction papers would be filed immediately, and any damage costs could be pursued legally.

Emily approached me, her previous bravado gone. “I thought we were family,” she said, tears brimming in her eyes.
