Theo nodded, though it was clear he was reluctant to let Amelie out of his sight. Olivia gently took Amelie from his arms, cooing softly to the baby, who stirred and whimpered but remained calm under her soothing touch.

As the medical team examined Theo, Olivia stayed close, asking simple questions to distract him. “Did you walk here all by yourself?” she asked, marveling at his bravery.

Theo nodded. “It wasn’t far, but it was cold,” he said, shivering at the memory. “I just kept thinking I had to keep Amelie warm.”

The exam revealed multiple bruises in various stages of healing, a testament to an ongoing nightmare no child should endure. Amelie, thankfully, seemed unharmed, but the signs of neglect were apparent—she was underweight and had a slight cough. The situation was dire, but they were in safe hands now.

As the hospital staff worked efficiently, a social worker was called in to assist with the case. Helen Morrow, who had seen far too many situations like this, approached with a gentle smile. “Hi, Theo. I’m Helen. I’m here to help you and Amelie find a safe place.”

Theo’s eyes widened with a mix of fear and hope. “Can we stay together?” he asked, voice trembling.

“Absolutely,” Helen assured him. “We’ll make sure you’re both safe and together.”

The night unfolded slowly, with Theo and Amelie being settled into a warm room within the hospital, complete with a soft bed and warm blankets. Olivia stayed by their side, reading stories until Theo’s eyes grew heavy with exhaustion, the adrenaline finally waning.

Before he fell asleep, Theo whispered, “Thank you.”

“You’re a brave boy, Theo,” Olivia replied, brushing his hair back gently. “You did something amazing tonight.”

As the first light of dawn crept through the windows, Theo and Amelie slept soundly, safe from the fear they had lived with for too long. Their future was uncertain, but with the support of those who had stepped up to help, it was a future that promised hope and healing. In the quiet of the hospital room, surrounded by people who cared, the siblings had found a sanctuary, beginning a journey toward a brighter tomorrow.
